California Promise Neighborhoods Bill Passes CA Assembly ED Committee! (Plus Video of Proceedings)

The California Assembly Education Committee considered AB 1178, the California Promise Neighborhoods Initiative, on Wednesday–and it passed!

This legislation is modeled on the federal Promise Neighborhoods program, and would make California a leader in the nation in providing greater opportunities for children and families at a state level.

Testimony in support of the bill was given by Michael McAfee, Dixon Slingerland (director of the Los Angeles Promise Neighborhood), and representatives from the Mission Promise Neighborhood in SF, Hayward. Many people lined up at the mic to lend their support as well–from the National Association of Social Workers, California Chapter, LAUSD, the California School Boards Association, the Fresno Promise Neighborhood, the Alliance for Boys and Men of Color, the Children’s Defense Fund, and the CA Charter School Association.

Testimony begins at 1:12:00. Check it out!
